Howard University, a traditionally Black college found in Washington, DC, has been awarded the Center for Minorities and Men and women with Disabilities in IT (CMD-IT) University Award for Retention of Minorities and College students With Disabilities in Computer system Science for the yr 2020.
The award, now in its fourth yr, focuses on representation of African People in america, Native People, Hispanics, and persons with disabilities in undergraduate laptop or computer science applications, and consists of a $15,000 dollars prize for the profitable institution.
“We, the electrical engineering and computer system science division, are incredibly honored to have been identified by profitable the 2020 CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer system Science. We are dedicated to generating computing curriculum that is socially and culturally aware, whilst retaining the high-quality of our program,” said Ahmed Rubaai, professor and chair of Howard’s electrical engineering and personal computer science section.
CMD-IT chooses its winner dependent not only on quantitative studies on five yrs of retention information, but also on qualitative elements as nicely. Qualitative standards involve the distinct retention courses in spot, details about the diploma-granting unit, and contextual information about the nominated institution.

Howard College, CMD-IT said, had amazing quantitative final results, and it singled out three certain packages in the personal computer science division that directly contributed to retention.
Howard University is one of 10 traditionally Black university and college individuals in Google’s Google In Residence plan, which places a Google program engineer in a college to educate computer system science programs. “The GIR system normally takes a software program engineer performing in Silicon Valley and gives them the chance to expose the college students to projects, problems, and technological innovation that Silicon Valley has solved or is currently resolving,” CMD-IT reported.
The university’s Howard West initiative was produced in cooperation with Google to immerse pc science undergraduate students in Silicon Valley lifestyle, projects, and problems by positioning them at Google’s headquarters for the summer time semester. For the duration of that time, students are co-taught by Howard professors and Google engineers on matters like program engineering, mobile app advancement, and machine learning. Howard College is at this time in talks with other tech corporations to develop the method.
Howard also features the Howard College CS Bootcamp Software, a tutoring initiative for pc science undergraduates having introductory CS programs. The method includes two times-weekly bootcamp classes run by junior and senior CS undergraduates that include not long ago covered matters and give follow and aid to individuals in want.
