Woman creates doll to inspire underrepresented kids
PHOENIX, Ariz. (KNXV) — A female invented an interactive doll to stimulate underrepresented children to master much more about computer system science and encourage them to be a part of the subject.
Bukola Somide has been a program engineer for 17 many years. She claimed she’s normally the only Black person or Black girl on her staff.
“So I know you will find a have to have, so I know there is a scarcity,” she reported.
She made the character ‘Somi the Laptop or computer Scientist’ to support train personal computer science concepts. It started out off as a storybook.
“I come to feel like there is a lack of relatable mentors in this industry, so that’s why I designed this underrepresented character,” Somide said.
Somide required to teach and entertain young children, so that is how the doll was born. Somi speaks 220 words in 12 different phrases. She points out concepts like algorithm, HTML, artificial intelligence and code.
Somide stated the doll’s seem was also significant.
“I desired her to emulate an underrepresented boy or girl so they can see her and be motivated. I seriously want to shatter that mental glass ceiling that from time to time restrictions us when we really don’t see types in the industry that we are intrigued in or not even be aware of,” she said.
Somi is named after Somide’s daughter, who is now 7 several years aged.
Somide not too long ago teamed up with a nonprofit that will fund finding the doll and a laptop or computer science workbook to instructors for cost-free.
